OGUN MCPDP History

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria established the Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programme (MCPDP) and inaugurated committees in all the states of the Federation to update all Practicing Nurses on current trends in nursing education and practice for effective client care. The place of nursing in the health care system is also getting more and more complex. Nursing roles are expanding in leaps and bounds and we are taking on more responsibilities that require critical thinking skills.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (established by (Act Cap. No 143 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004) is the regulatory Body of the Nursing Profession in Nigeria. It is concerned with Nursing Education, Registration and Practice for effective client care.

The inauguration of the state facilitators took place at Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan from 23rd – 24th March 2010 and all the state of the federation were mandated to commence training of Nurses. The programme was designed for all cadres of nurses and is to be undertaken throughout their professional nursing career. It is a continuous formal learning programme within and outside the practice setting.

Nurse Plegde

I solemnly pledge before God and in the presence of this Assembly, to pass my life in purity and to practice my profession faithfully I will abstain from whatever is deleterious or mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.

I will do all my power to maintain and to elevate that standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyalty, I will endeavor to cooperate with my workers and professional organizations in this work and devote myself to the welfare of those committed to my service

Goal of MCPDP

To improve, renew and update the knowledge, skills and abilities of all nurses and midwives and to ensure that appropriate and high quality nursing and health services are rendered to individual patients/clients, families and communities

MCPDP Rationale

  • To expose Nurses to current development as well as new trends in health and nursing care

  • To sharpen the knowledge and skills of Nurses on better ways of rendering quality, individualized, goal directed nursing care using the Nursing Process approach.

  • To constantly bring to the fore health issues as regards Nursing practice and collaborative care. Seek to correct significant deficiencies and challenges that militate against quality nursing care delivery in health care institutions and at community level.

  • To promote good leadership qualities, managerial and organizational skills among the senior nurses thereby enhancing preceptorship and mentorship as tools for building a dynamic profession.

  • Be a requirement for participation in council’s activities and especially, renewal of license.
